Unbundling is Coming: Making Sense of New Perinatal Billing and Coding for Midwives

The transition from global maternity billing to unbundled maternal care coding represents a significant change in reimbursement, documentation, and workflow for midwifery practice. Recent changes to the American Medical Association (AMA) Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Code Set adopted by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) require clinicians to report antepartum, intrapartum, birth, and postpartum services separately rather than relying on traditional global OB package codes. This activity prepares midwives to apply new coding requirements across the continuum of care.

Participants will learn the appropriate codes for prenatal, postpartum, and other outpatient visits; antenatal hospital admission; birth; and inpatient and outpatient postpartum care through case-based examples and coding scenarios. Attendees will also learn to distinguish straightforward and complex labor management in order to bill intrapartum care. Content will emphasize practical application for CNMs and CMs working in midwifery-led care practices or other models of care that include physicians or multi-disciplinary teams.
