The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) created this Privacy Statement to demonstrate our commitment to the privacy of our members and non-members. ACNM respects your preferences concerning the collection and use of your Personal Information. This Privacy Statement discloses the privacy practices for the following websites: www.midwife.org, connect.midwife.org, portal.midwife.org, jmwh.org.
Data Collection and Use
Collection, retention, and use of personal information may occur if member and non-member users interact with ACNM's Web site, by either registering with the site or participating in one of ACNM's services. Member may be required to provide their name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, ACNM member identification number, and/or other identifying information. This information is used to verify status with the ACNM membership database and to respond to inquiries and/or requests. Non-member may be required to provide an e-mail address, for ACNM to respond to inquiries and/or requests.
ACNM may use e-mail addresses provided by member users to notify them of upcoming events from ACNM as well as Regional or Affiliate news and events. Member who do not wish to receive such e-mails should notify ACNM's Membership Department of their express request, via e-mail to [email protected] or by mail to ACNM Member Services, 409 12 St SW, Suite 600, Washington, DC 20024. Members can opt-out or change their preferences for receiving such information at any time.
Use of Cookies and IP Address
Cookies are small pieces of information stored by your browser on your computer, which are used to aid in Web navigation. ACNM's Web site uses session cookies. When member users log onto portions of ACNM's Web site, an identifier is temporarily created and placed in their computer's memory, so the member can access the members-only pages using their member website credentials. The cookie contains no personal information and is self-terminated upon exiting the browser.
A unique number called an IP address identifies each computer on the Internet. Each time users connect to the Internet; their computer is assigned an IP address. When users connect to ACNM's Web site, the IP address is stored for statistical purposes.

Recipients of Awards and Grants
ACNM may disclose award recipients' personal information, including funding and project summary information, for the purpose of publicizing ACNM awards and/or assessing the subsequent success of ACNM's award recipients.
Order Fulfillment
We may ask you for certain information, such as credit card information, when you order products or services, or when you register for an educational activity. We use this information to process your request and may share this information with credit card processing companies, merchants, and other third parties that may need the information for your request to be processed. These organizations have their own privacy and data collection practices, and we are not responsible for their independent policies. Surveys
From time to time, we request information from members and other constituents via surveys. Participation in these surveys is completely voluntary. Information requested may include demographic information, such as name, address, age, membership category or professional affiliation. We use survey information to improve our programs, products and services, support our strategic planning efforts and gauge the satisfaction of our stakeholders.
E-Mail
E-mail submissions over the Internet may not be secure. Please consider this before emailing any personal or confidential information.
Security
What about us - what security measures do we have in place?
The security of your Personal Information is very important to ACNM. We use physical, electronic, and administrative safeguards that are designed to protect your Personal Information from loss, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and destruction.
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your user name and password, and you are responsible for all uses of your registration or password, and all related charges, whether or not authorized by you. ACNM uses SSL encryption for transmitting information over the Internet and participates in the Verisign (Restricted) e-commerce system for handling credit card transactions online. You agree to notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your registration number or password.
You are prohibited from violating or attempting to violate the security of the ACNM Web sites. ACNM will investigate actual and suspected security breaches and may involve, and cooperate with, law enforcement authorities in prosecuting users who are involved in such violations.
Sensitive Information
You shall not send us, and you shall not share any sensitive Personal Information (e.g. Social Security numbers, information related to racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religion or other beliefs, health, criminal background or trade union membership).
ACNM Rights and Obligations
ACNM reserves the right (but is not obligated) to monitor, edit and/or delete communications or documents posted on the ACNM site, and/or disclose any such communication or document to any person or entity, including local, state or federal law enforcement authorities, in accordance with the ACNM Privacy Policy.
ACNM reserves the right to take any action it deems necessary to protect the personal safety of our users or the public. ACNM has no liability or responsibility to users of the Web site or any other person or entity for performance or nonperformance of the aforementioned activities.
Third Party
ACNM may disclose your personal information if required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to 1) conform to legal requirements or comply with legal process served on ACNM, 2) protect and defend the rights of property of ACNM, or 3) protect the personal safety of ACNM personnel or members of the public in urgent circumstances.
The American College of Nurse-Midwives reserves the right to amend the Privacy Statement at any time for any reason. This Privacy Statement only applies to information collected by ACNM through ACNM's Websites.
Connect Communities/Groups
If you elect to participate in an Connect community/group, you are responsible for your communications, the consequences of posting those communications, and your reliance on any communications posted in Connect community/group. ACNM is not responsible for the consequences of any communications in an Connect community/ group. In cases where you feel threatened or offended by a communication posted in a Connect community/group, you may contact ACNM directly by sending an e-mail to [email protected].
As an ACNM member, you hereby agree that the following actions while participating in an Connect community/group shall constitute a material breach of these Terms and Conditions
- Using a Connect community/group for any purpose in violation of local, state, national or international regulations or laws;
- Posting materials that infringe on the intellectual property rights of others or on privacy or publicity rights of others, including individuals in a patient relationship with you or a medical institution with whom you are associated;
- Posting materials that are unlawful, obscene, defamatory, threatening, harassing, abusive, slanderous, hateful, embarrassing or offensive to any other person or entity as determined by ACNM it is sole discretion;
- Posting advertisements or solicitations of business;
- Impersonating another person, living or dead, or misrepresenting your medical training and knowledge;
Allowing any other person or entity to use your password to enter a Connect community/group and to post or view comments; or - Engaging in any other conduct that restricts or inhibits any other person from using or enjoying the Connect community/group or ACNM site, or which in the sole judgment of ACNM exposes ACNM or any of its users or members to any liability or detriment of any type.
- Deliberate “dissemination” of any aspect of a person’s identity, to include but not limited to their email address, phone number, physical address, religious or health information, without their consent except as necessary to protect vulnerable people from intentional abuse.
International Visitors
ACNM sites shall be operated in accordance with laws of the United States and visitors to ACNM sites should be aware that the laws of the United States may differ from those of their respective countries of residence.
By providing your personal information as an international visitor or user, you are: permitting the transfer of your personal information to the United States, which may not have the same data protection laws as the country in which you reside; and permitting the use of your personal information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
