ACNM Statement: Shooting at Methodist Dallas Medical Center

The following statement is attributable to American College of Nurse-Midwives, Chief Executive Officer, Katrina H. Holland:

ACNM is saddened by the news of a shooting in the mother-baby unit at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, killing a nurse and social worker. We know there have been multiple shootings in the past week, and we mourn for all the individuals who lost their lives and send condolences to their families.

Gun related violence in the United States is major public health crisis, and we all continue pay the cost. While women and families from all demographics can be affected, women of color, particularly those who live in low-income urban communities, are disproportionately affected by gun violence. Violence in health care settings continues to increase, and we must work together to improve safety.

ACNM joins the ANA and AWHONN in supporting H.R. 1195/ S. 4182, the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act, which would establish an enforceable Workplace Violence Prevention Standard that would protect nurses, midwives, and other healthcare providers from the potential dangers of combative patients and visitors.
