SUMMARY:Surgical First Assist Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Midwife as Surgical First Assistant is an expanded practice area for the CNM and CM. The midwife who serves as first assistant in surgery functions as a perinatal and birth professional in the perioperative setting. The workshop’s focus is on applying current evidence so midwives can participate and provide continuity of care for clients during a cesarean section. In this course\, you will learn core knowledge and skills needed to perform as the surgical first assistant for cesarean\, at a novice level. \nThis course is designed specifically for midwives and addresses the promotion of vaginal birth\, shared decision-making and informed consent\, and functioning as an active member of the perioperative team. Attendees learn how to perform immediate pre-op preparation of the client for surgery\, and during surgery provide optimal surgical exposure\, participate in tissue dissection\, ensure hemostasis\, perform or facilitate wound closure\, and perform other intraoperative functions to assist the surgeon in carrying out a safe operation that optimizes outcomes.

SUMMARY:Realizing Person-Centered Decision-Making for Routine Induction of Labor
DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines how person-centered decision-making can guide counseling for routine induction of labor. Grounded in midwifery values and aligned with the ACNM position statement\, the session emphasizes informed choice\, respect for autonomy\, and preference-concordant care. We will explore practical strategies and clinical tools that support meaningful\, values-aligned conversations and demonstrate how to use a patient-centered decision aid in clinical practice to optimize shared decision-making with patients. \n  \nPresented by: \nKari Radoff CNM\, FACNM\n \nAnn Peralta\, DrPH\, MPH

SUMMARY:Missed\, Delayed\, Preventable: Syphilis in Pregnancy and the Power of Point-of-Care Testing
DESCRIPTION:Syphilis rates in pregnancy continue to rise despite long-standing screening recommendations and effective treatment. This session will explore where and why missed opportunities occur across the perinatal continuum\, with attention to barriers that delay diagnosis and treatment. Current screening recommendations and emerging point-of-care testing options that can support timely\, patient-centered care will be highlighted.\n\nPresented by:\n\n\nHelen M. Hurst DNP\, RNC-OB\, APRN-CNM
