SUMMARY:Surgical First Assist Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Midwife as Surgical First Assistant is an expanded practice area for the CNM and CM. The midwife who serves as first assistant in surgery functions as a perinatal and birth professional in the perioperative setting. The workshop’s focus is on applying current evidence so midwives can participate and provide continuity of care for clients during a cesarean section. In this course\, you will learn core knowledge and skills needed to perform as the surgical first assistant for cesarean\, at a novice level. \nThis course is designed specifically for midwives and addresses the promotion of vaginal birth\, shared decision-making and informed consent\, and functioning as an active member of the perioperative team. Attendees learn how to perform immediate pre-op preparation of the client for surgery\, and during surgery provide optimal surgical exposure\, participate in tissue dissection\, ensure hemostasis\, perform or facilitate wound closure\, and perform other intraoperative functions to assist the surgeon in carrying out a safe operation that optimizes outcomes.

SUMMARY:State-Level Associations Between Poverty\, Rurality\, Midwifery Care\, and Birth Outcomes: A Secondary Data Analysis
DESCRIPTION:This session will present findings from a state-level secondary data analysis examining associations among poverty\, rurality\, midwifery care\, and adverse birth outcomes across the United States. The presentation will situate the study within current maternal and infant mortality trends and persistent rural and socioeconomic disparities in maternity care access. Participants will review the study design\, analytic approach\, regression findings\, and exploratory interaction effects suggesting that the relationship between midwifery care and birth outcomes may differ by rurality. The session will also consider the implications of these findings for maternity care systems\, workforce planning\, and public health policy. Discussion will emphasize the potential role of midwifery care in strengthening maternal and infant health\, particularly in rural communities.\n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\nAt the conclusion of this session\, participants will be able to: \n\n\nDescribe current U.S. and global trends in maternal and infant mortality\nIdentify key disparities related to poverty and rurality in the U.S.\nExplain how poverty\, rurality\, and midwifery care function as a system-level determinants of birth outcomes within a state-level maternal health framework\nInterpret findings from multiple linear regression and interaction models examining the association between midwifery care and adverse birth outcomes.\nDiscuss the evolving role of midwifery care as a public health strategy to improve birth outcomes\, particularly in rural communities.\n\n\nSpeaker \nMyra DeLuca\, MSN\, CNM\, FACNM

SUMMARY:Midwifery Week 2026: Clinical Strategies for the Screening & Identification of the Most Common Mental Health Disorders in the Midwifery Setting
DESCRIPTION:Approximately 26% of women in the US experience a mental health disorder\, 7.1% have a serious\, persistent mental health disorder. Of these persons only half will receive treatment. Without diligent screening\, mental health disorders will go unrecognized. The midwifery clinical setting is an ideal place to implement an evaluation process for identification of symptoms associated with mental health disorders. This will allow formal diagnosis and initiation of the treatment process through education\, medication management.\, therapy\, or referral. This presentation provides a method to apply and integrate the screening process into clinical practice.\nSpeaker(s)\n\nCheryl Carroll\, DNP\, CNM\, PMHNP-BC\, PMHCNS-BC\, CST

SUMMARY:Midwifery Week 2026: Before You Were a Thought: Utilizing Preconception Care as a Strategy to Address Maternal Mortality and Morbidity
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, Certified Nurse Midwife and Birth Justice Advocate Shanti Moore will share why creating access to preconception care is an underutilized approach to mitigating rates of maternal mortality. Shanti also will elucidate how providing access to lab testing during the preconception period is a simple but viable approach to improving maternal health outcomes.\nLearning Objectives\n\nAt the conclusion of this session\, participants will be able to: \n\n\nIdentify inequities within preconception care.\nExplain how a lack of access to preconception care contributes to poor maternal health outcomes.\nExplore ways to provide preconception counseling within a community health setting.\n\n\nSpeaker\n\nShanti Moore\, MSN\, CNM

SUMMARY:Midwifery Week 2026: The Power of Midwifery: A Policy Roadmap to Transform Maternal Health in the District of Columbia-Maryland-Virginia Region
DESCRIPTION:The Power of Midwifery: Developing a Regional Policy Roadmap webinar presents how a convening of 73 midwives\, physicians\, policymakers\, and advocates across the DC-Maryland-Virginia region developed an actionable\, evidence-based policy roadmap for championing CNM\, CM and CPM led care. Drawing on stakeholder input and grounded in the principles of birth justice and lived experience\, the roadmap delivers state-specific priorities from reimbursement equity and hospital privileges to workforce pipeline and governance reform with phased implementation pathways and measurable milestones through 2029. Whether you are a clinician\, advocate\, educator\, or policymaker\, this session will equip you with an exemplar of a coordinated regional strategy to strengthen\, sustain\, and diversify the midwifery workforce and expand equitable access to high-quality maternity care in your region. \nThis session is pre-recorded and will be available at 9:00 am on October 8.\nLearning Objectives\n\nAt the conclusion of this session\, participants will be able to:\n \n\n\nDescribe the current policy landscape for midwifery workforce regulation\, reimbursement\, and governance across the District of Columbia\, Maryland\, and Virginia\, including jurisdiction-specific barriers to expanding access to midwifery care.\nIdentify at least three actionable\, evidence-based policy priorities from the tri-regional roadmap — spanning payment parity\, hospital privileges\, independent governance\, and workforce pipeline — and explain the rationale and implementation pathway for each.\nApply a coordinated advocacy framework to advance midwifery workforce policy in their own jurisdiction\, using the roadmap’s phased milestones and stakeholder engagement strategies to support short-\, mid-\, and long-term change through 2029.\n\n\nSpeakers\n\nAshley Gresh\, PhD\, MSN\, MA\, CNM\n \n  \nShaina French\, MSN\, CNM\, FACNM\, IF\n \nJamie Swietlikowski\, MS\, CNM\, PMHNP\, FACNM\n \nKatie Brescia\, BS\n \nNoelene K. Jeffers\, PhD\, CNM\, IBCLC
