Statement from the American College of Nurse-Midwives on Violence Within the Nation's Capital

January 8, 2021 - ACNM strongly denounces the violent attack on our democracy that took place on Wednesday in our nation's capital. One of the hallmarks of the United States is the respect and honor we have for our democratic processes, and it was shameful to watch our own citizens attempt to prevent them.

This summer, Black Lives Matter protests in many cities across the country were overwhelmingly peaceful, yet many of them were met with violent responses from law enforcement. The reaction, or lack thereof, from law enforcement to Wednesday's events made it abundantly clear the privileges afforded to White people in our country.

As leaders in the midwifery profession, ACNM stands in solidarity with those calling for policies and strategies to dismantle systematic racism in the United States. Change is needed now more than ever.
