ACNM Response to Out of Hospital Birth Statement

ACNM Response to ACOG 'Out of Hospital Birth' Policy Statement

In October 2006, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists published an 'Out of Hospital Birth' policy statement. (The statement is available on their Web site, but only to ACOG members.)

According to this description from the ACOG Web site, "[ACOG] Executive Board Statements of Policy...represent a position of the organization, which is binding upon its elected officials and staff in College matters, but not upon the individual Fellows in their medical practices."

On November 21, 2006, ACNM, with eight other organizations, responded to the new ACOG policy. Read the letter. The following organizations signed onto the ACNM letter:

American College of Nurse-Midwives
American Association of Birth Centers
American Nurses Association
Birth Network National
Citizens for Midwifery
Coalition for Improving Maternity Care Services
Lamaze International (letter)
White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood
Midwives Alliance of North America

The American Association of Birth Centers also wrote to ACOG in response to the new policy. The AABC letter is here.
