Salem Hospital Sends Midwives Packing
Midwives at the Salem Women's Clinic have become popular among expectant parents in the Salem area. But four midwives at the clinic are being forced to end their practices at the end of June. The problem is a conflict between Salem Hospital and the doctor that oversees the midwives. The hospital says the case is isolated to one physician: Doctor Elizabeth Harmon. Now, she's filed an anti-trust lawsuit. And as unusual as that might sound, as Colin Fogarty reports, midwifery experts say the case is not unique. |

Tiffany Branam was six months pregnant with her son Josiah when she first met Shane Hirst, the certified nurse midwife at the Voss Center for Women. "I had been reading a lot about natural birth and I decided that I wanted to do it that way," Branam said. After paying visits to Hirst's office for prenatal care, Branam bravely went through an all-natural birth at Ball Memorial Hospital, while having Hirst with her every step of the way during labor. |

One week away from delivering her first child, Rikki Margrave was getting one of her final checkups from Erin Kapla. But there wasn't a doctor in the room. "That's what she was more comfortable with," said Margrave's husband Dave Margrave regarding his wife's choice to use a midwife. "She wants to deliver with a midwife if at all possible."

Midwife aids expectant mothers
When patients meet with certified nurse midwife Suzanne Berger for the first time, she will often ask them if they know what a midwife is. "I tell them in the beginning there was Adam and Eve and there probably was a midwife," said Berger, who works for the Women's Care Center in Rhinebeck and Kingston. "Midwives have been helping women since the beginning of time."
