ACNM - Health Care ReformHealth Care Reform

ACNM President Kitty Ernst announces formation of a Presidential Task Force on Health Care Reform, chaired by Marion McCartney, CNM FACNM.  The Task Force is designed to ramp up ACNM's presence in the health care reform arena.  Click HERE to read the press release.

Read the ACNM Issue Brief on Health Disparities, which highlights our concerns regarding women's health outcomes and services, and affirms our committment to continue to address inequities for women in our current health care system.

ACNM members may now join a Health Care Reform e-midwife discussion group on our web site.  Click HERE to use your member login, then check "Health Care Reform" on the list.

ACNM is also working in coalition with other groups concerned with building a better health care system:

  • National Coalition on Health Care
ACNM is an active member of the National Coalition on Health Care (NCHC).  NCHC is a non-profit and rigorously non-partisan coalition comprised of more than 70 organizations.  It employs or represents about 150 million Americans and is the nation's largest and most broadly representative alliance working on health care reform.  The Coalition's Specifications for Reform and Projections of Costs and Savings are available on their web site.

  • Code Blue Now!
Code Blue Now! is a national, non-profit and non-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to giving the public a voice in shaping a new health care system.  It was formed in October 2003 from the ideas emerging from a national contest, Build an American Health System, and is actively working to build consensus on key principles and core elements for a new system.  Terri Clark, CNM, serves on the board of Code Blue Now!

With the 2008 Presidential elections looming on the horizon, Code Blue Now! and the National Coalition on Health Care partnered to develop an Opinionnaire®, a survey designed to gather information about what the American public values when it comes to health care.

ACNM worked with Code Blue Now! to add 3 additional questions to this survey, which was open through December 31, 2007.   Responses from ACNM members will be tabulated along with all other respondents.   ACNM will also receive reports about our member responses.  After the responses have been collected, Code Blue Now! will prepare an in-depth report of the findings in order to inform elected officials, presidential candidates and the media.  The goal was to have at least 50,000 people (and 4,000 midwives!) reply.
