It’s Time to Stop and Savor the Full Bloom of Modern Midwifery

By Melissa Garvey, ACNM Senior Writer-Editor

It’s hard to imagine a time when the midwifery community isn’t brimming with action and forward momentum. Even so, I feel compelled to stop and savor what is turning out to be a particularly momentous spring for ACNM and the broader midwifery community.

Midwives received significant air time last week leading up to Mother’s Day. ACNM member Patricia Loftman, CNM, told the world she was a midwife on the May 8 episode of Wheel of Fortune (she also won the game!). Consumer Reports and The Wall Street Journal highlighted findings from Childbirth Connection’s national survey of childbearing women, Listening to Mothers III, which includes glowing reviews from women who used midwives as their birth care providers. The week topped off with Mother’s Day coverage of the “modern midwifery movement” on CBS Sunday Morning, featuring ACNM 58th Annual Meeting & Exhibition closing premier speaker and midwifery icon Ina May Gaskin.

This week, the Mother’s Day momentum continues. ACNM Virtual Lobby Week is in full swing, which means midwives across the nation are calling their federal legislators to garner support for 2 important bills: MOMS for the 21st Century and Quality Care for Moms and Babies. If you haven’t participated already, ACNM has made it simple to dive in with just 15 minutes out of your day. Learn more at www.midwife.org/vlw2013 and when you’re ready, enter your zip code to get started with step-by-step instructions, including a call script, here.

On Tuesday, ACNM co-sponsored a Congressional briefing about quality maternity care with The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG National), Childbirth Connection, and National Partnership for Women & Families. Yesterday also marked a reception in Washington, DC, honoring this year’s National Women’s Hall of Fame inductees, one of whom is Ina May Gaskin. Gaskin, along with Nancy Pelosi and 7 other renowned women will be formally inducted on October 12 in Seneca Falls, NY, birthplace of the American Women’s Rights movement.

Are you getting midwife fever yet? Stop, drop what you’re doing, and pick up the phone! There’s never been a better year to participate in ACNM Virtual Lobby Week. You can call anytime between now and close of business Friday, May 17. Please join us in celebrating and advocating for midwives!
