A Calling Toward Educating on Midwifery

By Debra K., The Journey into Wellbeing

Educating the world on natural health and wellness is my life’s calling. I embarked upon this mission in my mid-40s, and never thought, at my age, I would become an advocate for natural birth.

It was during the filming of the pilot for my show, “The Journey into Wellbeing”, that I learned the story of Mary Breckinridge who founded Frontier Nursing University 75 years ago in Eastern Kentucky. We profiled this American hero and the significant differences she made in the lives of Kentucky families, as well her continuing impact on health care today.

Prior to learning about Frontier, I always assumed that working with a midwife was only an option if I was pregnant. Over the past few years, I have learned that mom, dad, and the kids can all benefit by partnering with a midwife at different phases of their family’s growth.

A lot of people are just like me in that they are confused by midwifery, so I created a series of brief educational videos. We shot these videos in South Florida, which is home to an amazing birth center, Breath of Life. The first video shows my chat with Chris Hilderbrandt, CNM, ARNP. Chris is the Director of Breath of Life and a passionate advocate for midwifery. This video includes myth-busting, details on what happens at a birth center, and we even cover insurance options.

I hope you will enjoy this video and share it with your network. It should be a useful tool to help families understand the many benefits of partnering with a midwife. This video is the first of several that will be shared monthly. I look forward to your feedback and suggestions for content. You may feel free to reach me via e-mail at [email protected].

As the host of The Journey into Wellbeing series on PBS, Debra K. uncovers the secrets to living a high-energy, vibrant life.
